Larry "Pete" Louis Marek, 53, of Kingston, Idaho, passed away April 15, 2011 at the Lucky Friday Mine in Mullan due to a mining accident. He was born April 11, 1958 in Fargo, N.D.; Larry was the son of Leo and Hazel (Smith) Marek.
Larry moved to the Silver Valley as a small child with his family in 1961, from North Dakota. Larry attended and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1976.
He married Patricia "Pat" Miller on March 27, 1990 in Reno, Nev.
Larry was a miner and had worked at various mines in the Silver Valley and had lastly worked for the Lucky Friday Mine of the Hecla Mining Company; he had also mined in Montana and Nevada. Larry had also served as a logger at various times in his life.
He loved and enjoyed his family - the family get-togethers, barbecues and playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting, hiking, camping, searching for antlers and building anything. Larry also loved working on vehicles; he recently was working on his "ultimate" hunting rig (Samurai).
Larry is survived by his wife Patricia "Pat" Marek of the family home in Kingston; four children, Hayley Marek of Vancouver, Wash., Casey Marek of Pinehurst, Ricky Marek of Kingston, and Sheena Marek of Smelterville; five grandchildren, Layla and Jadlyn Senderson (identical twins) of Vancouver, Wash., Madisyn and Leo Marek of Kellogg, and Lexus Levis of Smelterville; his father Leo Marek of Pinehurst; four brothers, Mike Marek of Osburn, Terry "Fred" Marek (Larry's twin brother) of Kellogg, Donny Marek of Pinehurst, and Danny Marek of Pinehurst; five sisters, Marilyn Marek of Pinehurst, Eleanore Goebel of Coeur d'Alene, Elaine McKever of Tri-Cities, Wash., Karen Kero of Elma, Wash. and Debra Rodin of Montana. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Hazel Marek, two brothers David Marek and Ronald Haak, and one sister Janice Haak.
Cremation was held and a celebration of Larry's life will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the Kellogg High School Gymnasium with Pastor Corey Berti officiating. The family wishes to express that everyone dress casual and/or in hunting or mining attire. A potluck reception and a gathering of family and friends will be held at the Silver Valley Veterans Memorial Hall (formerly the Steelworkers Union Hall), 110 N. Hill St., Kellogg, following services; everyone is welcome.
The family suggests that memorials may be made to the charity of the Donor's choice.
