Gonzaga Basketball Thread
Well, we've seen them beat North Carolina and Texas, and we've seen them lose 4 in a row, and lose to St. Mary's. I had this poll question on here before. Has anyone changed their minds? How far will Gonzaga go this year? Also, I wanted to start the GU thread up once again...

That's a bummer about the Kellogg girls last night.
The Zags streak of 30 consecutive league wins ended on Monday night. I guess that is a pretty impressive feat... They didn't play anywhere near well enough the other night to win and deserved the defeat.

I hate to disagree with you plu, but I think Raivio will be missed much more than Mallon. You are right though in that Raivio has been inconsistent. In the games in which he is not involved, does not get many shots up, or isn't hitting his shots, is when the Zags lose. All of their big wins are when Raivio is hitting his 3's.

That was a beyond huge win last night at Stanford in double overtime. I was thinking during the middle of it, that that was basically an NCAA Tournament play-in game. I think if the Zags lost that last night, then they would have had to win the conference tourney. I think that win got them in, as long as they lose no more than 2 or 3 the rest of the way...
Pargo is the absolute man. What a signing he was. If they didn't have him, the Zags would be below .500. He just took over that game last night...

I agree that the win was huge but I don't know about it getting them into the tournament in March even if they lose 2-3 more the rest of the way. The WCC isn't exactly a powerhouse conference so if they drop another league game I can't see the committee putting much faith in them as being tournament worthy and only an automatic bid would get them in. Each year there is a tough mid-major that gets left out because they didn't win their conference tournament and the committee adds 6-7 teams from a major like the Big 12, Pac-10, Big 10, SEC.

Roops, you are right in that if they lose 3 conference games, they will not make it. I was including in those 2 to 3 losses, losing to Memphis, who is a top 12 team. I still think they could afford one more loss during their WCC season, in which they would finish 12-2, lose to Memphis, and lose in the Conference Championship and they should get in based on their non-conference schedule. Any more than that though, they are NIT bound... To be safe though, they need to beat Memphis, hold strong in the conference and they are in.

Great game! What a future this young team has to look forward to. Rock, I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Roops on this one. They have to win, win, win. I hope they make it in, but even for the wcc the tourney is tough. The Zags should, I hope it isn't a must, beat Memphis, but most definately have to win the WCC title to get into March Madness.
I think this win against Stanford was huge for the Zags though. They folded in those four games against tough teams. It was almost like they thought they weren't good enough. This win I think seasoned this young team.

You are right in that the win seasoned the young team. The win is a definite confidence booster...
The Zags should win their conference tournament, which would in turn make our arguments not to matter. I still truly believe though that if what I said happens, they get an at large bid. However, this is coming from a man who only has a "Ph. d. in Kellogg Studies", not in bracketology... LOL.

LOL, "you are correct sir!"
I agree, they should win their tourney, and you could also be right about the "at large" bid. Mainly because of their reputation that they (Mr. Few) has built. Few isn't going to be there forever, so I just hope the next 2-3 years are good ones and they break a school record by going the deepest in the Madness that they ever have. Man, that was terrible sentence structure.

Basketball has no sentence structure... LOL... If they do lose a conference game, it also better be against Santa Clara, who is 15-7, or San Diego, who also has a winning record. If they lose to one of the joker teams in the WCC like Pepperdine who is something like 7-17, it would hurt their chances significantly for an at-large bid.

There's One!!! Roops, I think you are right. I think they only get one more mulligan this year. I think the only way they get an at-large bid is if they win their last 5 conference games & beat Memphis, and lose in the conference tournament championship. If they lose any more games before their conference tournament, even against Memphis, then they are probably in a must win in their conference tournament to make the Big Dance.Casey Fisher wrote:Roops, you are right in that if they lose 3 conference games, they will not make it. That brings up an interesting question for any college basketball fan. Would you rather win the NIT Tournament, or make the NCAA Tournament and get bounced in the 1st Round...

I can't believe they lost to L.M.!
I thought one of the top teams, but not L.M.! It makes me sick.
They have to win the tourney, but can they?
I would rather they play in March Madness, they have a good run going and this team needs the experience to build on for the next few years.

Well, Gonzaga's season just took a turn for the worst. Josh Heytvelt and injured forward Theo Davis got arrested last night with marijuana and mushrooms and are in jail... My guess is that they will be booted from the team. No Heytvelt inside doesn't look real good in these games down the stretch...

I just can't believe it.
Two things come to mind.
1. Although this could cost the team the season sometimes this kind of thing can straighten the lives of two men young men out and pull the rest of the team together. Yes, I'm trying to look at the bright side but the physical and mental health of these young men is more important than b-ball, and I hope they get the help they need.
2. I can't believe how selfish this is. I admit that in high school I partook in certain beverages at certain parties out in the woods, BUT I never did so during an athletic season!!! I know it probably wouldn't have made to much difference, however I knew the commitment I made and stuck to it.

Your points are right on plu.
Maybe the team can pull together. Hopefully those two can get their heads on straight and lives in order. And there is disappointment to the fans, but more importantly to the team. I can't imagine how much they must be let down... It's unfortunate such a stupid, selfish act can hurt so many people. Teams in general are families and when one or two members do something like this, they are letting everybody down big-time. It is very unfortunate...
