A Special Tribute to Sgt. Maj. Brad Conner, 1984 Graduate of KHS
Early this Wednesday morning, May 9th, Cyndi Conner, wife of Sgt. Maj. Bradley D. Conner, received a visit from the Army Chaplain that her husband of 18 yrs and father of their three beautiful children had been killed in the line of duty in Iraq. This was his fifth tour in Iraq where he served in the Army Special Forces, Green Beret, as a 20 year veteran. The vehicle that he and others were riding in was blown up when it ran over a mine. The others sustained serious injury, leaving Brad as the lone fatality.
Brad is a proud graduate of Kellogg High School, class of 1984. It seems appropriate for me to especially honor Brad as he was in the first class of athletes that I coached in the fall of 1983 after moving to Kellogg. Simply put, he was just a fantastic young man who had no enemies, and many, many friends. He was at the top of his ROTC class, involved in drama, was one of “Auntie Joy’s” most memorable choir students, participated successfully in sports, and was heavily involved in church youth activities (his father, Bill, was a pastor of a small church in Wardner). He was one of those students that just naturally becomes a friend upon leaving school. I will miss him.
This serves as a reminder to me that we have a number of other KHS graduates who are still so bravely and nobly serving our country during this time of war; one being Major Groves’ own son. Let’s keep them all in our prayers and thoughts that they will remain safe and protected while serving.
As Brad’s brother-in-law put it so well in his informational e-mail, “Despite our differences and shortcomings as a nation, we are still the land of the free........because of the brave.”

I am proud to say that I knew Brad well. He was my brother David's best friend in high school. He was in choir with David and me, and he played football and bball with David as well. We are leaving after school today to drive to Tacoma for the funeral tomorrow.

I don't have the words to express how proud I am to have known Brad. He was such a great guy in high school, and as his record shows, he truly dedicated his life to doing great things for other people.

Below is David's description of Brad Conner's service. He described the service and our friend Brad so passionately and beautifully that I wanted to share it with all of you.

Dear Classmates and friends from KHS,
It is with such a vast array of emotions that I write to you all again tonight. My sister Laurie and I have just returned from a quick trip to Tacoma where we had the great privilege of attending the army memorial service for Brad.It was the most emotional service I have ever attended. From the bagpipes playing "amazing grace" to the faint sound of "taps" outside the chapel at the end it was an incredible hour of honoring our friend and hero. I am so proud to tell you all that the young man we knew grew into an incredible Warrior. The words shared by other soldiers today make it so clear that Brad was respected as a leader, a man of faith, a man of integrity, and man who took all that we knew him as and magnified thos e qualities beyond expectation. He was a great son, brother, father, and husband.Throughout the service, it was clearly conveyed that everyone present had the utmost respect for Brad. One speaker mentioned that Brad had "no chicken little in him." Brad never complained, he never looked at a bad situation and thought that the sky was falling. No, Brad was a man who looked at a situation with a positive attitude and would find a way to make things work.I could tell you so much more, but I will close with these two things that clearly stood out. First, if you do not know "The Ballad of the Green Beret," you need to hear it. It was played near the end of the service and it certainly fit Brad. You can hear it on www.ilovewavs.com Second, was the final role call. For those who have been to a military memorial service before you probably know what this is...and if you don't want to cry again stop reading now.A soldier in the back of the chapel calls out names of some present and they respond accordingly. He then calls out "Sergeant Major Conner" - no response. He calls out again "Sergeant Major Brad Conner" - again, no response. Finally he calls out "Sergeant Major Bradly Dean Conner" - no response and then shots are fired outside the chapel and taps can be heard in the distance. I will never forget that moment.I pray that we as a class can find the best way to memorialize Brad Conner. I also pray my actions and life will be forever changed by remembering my friend "Opie." If I become half the man that he was I will consider myself truly blessed. Please continue to pray for Cyndi and the kids, all of the Conner family, and all the soldiers whose lives and families have been touched by Brad and touched by this war.God bless you all and peace be with you.

I talked to Lee Haynes today, he asked for the family's contact information. He is part of the Veterans here in the Valley. They are in the process of having the memorial put up over by the park and they want to honor Brad. Keep an eye in the paper regarding that, and I'm sure one of us will post it on here as well.

Laurie, I recvd that email that David wrote...and he wrote it so beautifully. I just cried and cried. Thank him for sharing!

If someone would like to point the family to the Silver Valley Veteran's Memorial website, the URL is:

There is an online registration form and e-mail contact for information on that site.

We just received word from Ralph Lowe that Brad's family is planning a memorial service to be held in Kellogg. The tentative date is June 9 at the United Church. We'll update as we learn more information.

It's official, Brad Conner's service in Kellogg will be on June 9th at 2:00 at the United Church. We are putting together a group of former KHS choir students who sang with Brad in the early 80s. If you were one of those people, feel free to contact me or Amy Fink for details.

Thanks LR. I hope it was OK that I cleaned up your posting of David's description of the service in Tacoma. I was very touched and impacted by David's message.

Well, I had big plans to make sure I posted something to this thread this Memorial Day, and the weekend has come and gone. My lack of a substantial post is not due to a shortage of emotions or gratefulness, rather lack of words to explain how impacted I am because of men and women like Sgt. Maj. Conner who willingly and bravely defend our freedoms. I simply cannot convey my gratitude adequately with words, but I will make it my mission to reciprocate to others the blessings I have received from people like Brad Conner, not only serving his country, but his God and his family too.

Let this memorial day be one that we will remember forever, as we honor Sgt. Maj. Conner each and every day we have with our friends and family.

Hello all--

My brother David asked me to share the following information with you:

As we prepare to honor and remember Brad this
Saturday, I wanted to let you know that a scholarship
fund for Kellogg High Students is being set up. I
have talked with Brenda and the family and they have
graciously given the OK for me to start the Brad
Conner Memorial Scholarship Fund. The account will
run through KHS and should be up and running as of
today.

Brads Kellogg service was great. Loved the music from the "KHS Choir" and Simon, did you do the slide show? It was very moving. I was honored to have been there!

I wanted to let everyone know about some opportunities to honor our friend Brad Conner. Gwen was kind enough to post a pdf. file on the front page regarding the upcoming golf scramble, which will be at Shoshone Golf course on Saturday, July 21. My brother David and Jim Hoffman have been working hard to put all this together, and they were able to get over $4,000 in donations in the first week. Now they are anxiously waiting for folks to sign up for the scramble. It will be a quality event with many fun elements (including a Dave Smith truck for a hole in one). You can also attend the steak dinner and action, even if you don't want to golf.

Let me know if you have any questions and pass on the word to any golfers who might be interested.

I just wanted to give an update for on the first annual Brad Conner Memorial Golf Scramble. My brother David and Jim Hoffman, as well as many others, have worked tirelessly to make this a successful event. They have already raised more than $10,000 to put toward the scholarship fund in Brad's honor, and the tournament this weekend will undoubtedly add considerably to that amount. The scramble itself is full, and 80 people have registered for the steak dinner.

This has been a real mission of love and commitment for David, Jim, and so many others. Thanks to those who have given and prayed. If anyone else is interested in donating any amount--small or large--to the scholarship fund, David's contact information in the flyer posted on the front page. You can also contact me for further information.
